So I've been going through my vinyl collection recently and spinning some of my older favourites whilst planning a classics mix. Quite a few of my records are quite dirty and I would like to hear what products/potions you guys use to clean your vinyl. I've used various things in the past including window cleaner and baby wipes but not sure if it's, A: good for the vinyl and B: any good at cleaning the vinyl properly. Your advice/suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers

A good quality mop & bucket is essential. I find Glade make a good cleaner - always brings our kitchen floor up nicely

In the States we have something called gruv glide. Kinda sounds like a lubricant, but it works well.

Thanks David. Think I might give that one a try. I actually spotted that while doing a google search the other day. Seems like a reasonably priced way of cleaning my vinyl.

Doesn't the glue get stuck to the needles?

as a cabinet maker/joiner I find the wood glue idea strange, however as a music lover I find the wood glue idea stranger :-))

It works because wood glues are polyvinyl acetate glues and won't bond with vinyl or plastic records. The use of polyvinyl acetate chemicals to clean records is nearly as old as the record itself. you should know this stuff about wood glue since you are the cabinet maker, whats even stranger is that you claim to be dj-ing since the second world war and to this day dont know about this technique

Good and valid point Truba,
I didn't say I knew nothing of PVA as a cleaner I said I think it's strange. Here's why, PVA will certainly lift any loose debris from the record surface, it won't dissolve grease or nicotine, tar, fats, oil or the cement that forms in the record groove because of the positive static charge the vinyl inherits during manufacture. The reason it won't do this, WATER. All modern professional record cleaning services use solvents because they recognise the things PVA won't remove are the things that cause all the damage.

I don't claim to have been DJaying since the second world war, although sometimes I feel that old getting home at 5am. I have been DJaying since England won the World Cup, I will concede refering to myself as a DJ back then is stretching the term, I was more a selector/collector/connector, probably still true.

dude wtf do you do with your records who runs their records thru fat, cement, oil, tar etc, i know you might get dust, bits of dirt here and there but cement, tar etc, where do you dj, to a bunch of brickies on a construction site or some shit. and btw your bio says that u been dj-ing since the 60's, if thats the case i been dj-ing since 87, my old man back home still has a sharp dual tape deck which could play both tapes at the same time, i use to mess around with it back then, i was 9 years old back then, didnt even know that one day that baloneywould be called mixing lol
